Russia and the West need cooperation concerning regional crises and conflicts amid the collapse of Afghanistan, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in Kalinigrad on Tuesday.

Speaking at the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University, Lavrov stated collaboration was needed “to promote the settlement of numerous regional crises and conflicts that persist in the world. This was again manifested very brightly amid the collapse of the situation in Afghanistan after the hasty withdrawal of the United States and NATO.”

During his speech, Lavrov also noted that Russia has a positive attitude to “depolitisized cooperation” with other countries, including on the situation in Afghanistan.

“We welcome cooperation through civil societies if it is really dictated by the desire to develop contacts between people, to help them communicate, to make friends,” he said.

The recent Taliban offensive in Afghanistan follows the US and other NATO forces’ ongoing withdrawal from the country.
