Russia: Death toll from Kamensk-Shakhtinsky chemical plant fire rises to 7

The last of seven employees to be hospitalised with chemical burns after a recent fire at a chemical plant in Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, Rostov region, died on Monday.

The plant where the incident took place, as well as the hospital where the employees died, could be seen on Monday.

The workers were taken to hospital on Thursday after the fire at the Kamensky plant, one of the largest chemical enterprises in southern Russia, left them with burns covering 80 to 100 percent of their bodies.
According to the plant’s owners, the fire was extinguished “as soon as possible by the fire safety system and the arrived fire brigade.”
The authorities say the accident did not lead to harmful emissions into the atmosphere. Dmitry Kapranov, head of the Department of Conventional Weapons, Ammunition, and Special Chemistry Industry of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, is looking into the incident.
According to preliminary data from the department, the fire occurred due to equipment malfunctions and safety violations.

SOT, Eugeniy, Local resident (Russian): “They say that the building is just on fire and that’s it. And what had happened thereafter that I heard from my friends, I had called my friends. I said: “What happened there? Did anything happen?” “No, he says, the building on fire is at Polymer Street.”

Local resident (Russian): “Sad news, of course, six people have already died, rest in peace. They ceased to escape: they had only 14 seconds to run out of the room. But in general, there had to be five people there, and there were seven of them. For safety.”
