Russia’s Emergencies Minister Evgeny Zinichev has died in Norilsk in an accident while taking part in a drill, representatives of the ministry announced on Wednesday.

The ministry published footage showing Zinichev opening a pilot research exercise in the Arctic zone, after which he supervised the liquidation of simulated emergencies at three training locations.

Zinichev also inspected the construction of a new fire station in Norilsk together with the region’s governor, Alexander Uss.

The minister died while trying to rescue film director Alexander Melnik, who slipped and fell off a cliff, the ministry said. He was 55 years old.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a Kremlin statement he was “shocked by the tragic news” and expressed his condolences to Zinichev’s family and friends.

SOT, Evgeny Zinichev, Russian Emergencies Minister (Russian): “The purpose of the drills is to assess the ability of the management bodies and forces to respond promptly to natural and human-caused emergencies. In the future, we will also conduct analysis, including scientific analysis. In practice, the following issues will be practiced: responding to emergencies specific to Arctic zones.”
