Russia: Emergencies Minister Evgeny Zinichev dies during drills

Russia’s Emergencies Minister Evgeny Zinichev has died in Norilsk in an accident while taking part in a drill, representatives of the ministry announced on Wednesday.

The ministry published footage showing Zinichev opening a pilot research exercise in the Arctic zone, after which he supervised the liquidation of simulated emergencies at three training locations.

Zinichev also inspected the construction of a new fire station in Norilsk together with the region’s governor, Alexander Uss.

The minister died while trying to rescue film director Alexander Melnik, who slipped and fell off a cliff, the ministry said. He was 55 years old.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a Kremlin statement he was “shocked by the tragic news” and expressed his condolences to Zinichev’s family and friends.

In the future, we will also conduct analysis, including scientific analysis. In practice, the following issues will be practiced: responding to emergencies specific to Arctic zones.”
