Russian and Uzbek armed forces conducted joint military exercises at the Termez training ground close to the Afghan border, footage released on Thursday by Russia’s Central Military District shows.

The troops practiced counter-terror operations using helicopters, and also conducted reconnaissance and search measures in mountainous terrain, the press office said.

According to Russia’s Ministry of Defence, 1,500 Russian and Uzbek troops take part in the exercises that run from July 30 to August 10.

The drills come amid a worsening situation in Afghanistan, where clashes between the Afghan army and Taliban forces have been ongoing for the last three months after international troops started to withdraw their forces from the country. Taliban has seized large territories in the fightings and has taken control of key border crossings to neighbouring countries like Pakistan.
