Russia: Eyewitnesses recount explosion at Orthodox convent school outside Moscow

Eyewitnesses who were near the Orthodox Vladychny convent in Serpukhov when the explosion went off on Monday morning recounted what they saw.

A pupil of the school attached to the convent, Denis Ryabov, said that he did not hear the explosion.

“They said that there was [an explosion], but I could only tell it from the smell,” the boy said.

Local resident Ruslan Karpov said that the emergency services arrived at the scene quickly but also criticised the protection of the convent.

“It’s weak in terms of protection. It is definitely weak in terms of protection,” the man commented.

A guard of the convent said the children were immediately evacuated after the explosion, adding that the territory is fenced off and a code is needed to enter the premises.

According to Russia’s Investigative Committee, an 18-year-old former student of the Orthodox school entered the site at around 8:30 am local time (05:30 GMT) and blew up the door of the school located on the property. At least eight people were injured in the explosion, including one child.

The suspected bomber survived the blast but is in extremely serious condition and has lost a leg, the committee said. The probe into the bombing continues.

SOT, Ruslan Karpov, Eyewitness: “The ambulance arrived quickly, and the firefighters arrived quickly. The firefighters were poorly oriented, they could not enter this gate - the gate is low. And as a local resident, I am telling you the security is bad.”

SOT, Ruslan Karpov, Eyewitness: “The organisation, how everything works there - everything is wonderful. The children are happy to go.”

Karpov: “No, no. Young people here in the summer have picnics with shisha smoking right near the gate. The guards don’t react in any way. That’s all.”

SOT, Ruslan Karpov, Eyewitness: “It’s lucky that the door got stuck, and not everyone went to the prayer service somewhere. If everyone had gone in and the door didn’t stick… this miracle happened in this holy place… then there would be much more injuries: burns, concussions. They said that the guy [who set off the explosion] had his leg blown off, they saw his leg lying there. That’s according to the babushkas and grandchildren.”

SOT, Security guard: “The gymnasium is fenced off. There is an iron gate. There is a coded lock. You enter the code, and it opens. You go to the gymnasium, to the very entrance of the gymnasium, there is also a metal door and a coded lock.”
Journalist: “How often does the code change?”
Guard: “How would I know?”
SOT, Guard: “They [children] were immediately evacuated through other doors and taken to the territory of the monastery, to the church.”
