Russia’s state energy giant Gazprom will not halt gas exports to Moldova due to unpaid bills after a request from Chisinau, the company’s spokesperson Sergei Kupriyanov said in St Petersburg on Wednesday.
“Moldovan side completely recognises the legitimacy of Gazprom’s claims and commits to paying off the current debt on Friday, November 26. As an exception and gesture of goodwill and understanding, regarding the difficult situation the residents of Moldova might face, Gazprom agreed to these conditions,” the spokesman said.
Moldova signed a five-year contract extension for a gas supply with Gazprom in October and currently faces a total debt of approximately $709 million (€631m, £529m) to the supplier, pending an audit.
