Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Russian Federation Geza Andreas von Geyr was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry in Moscow, as reported by the ministry on Monday.

The reason for his visit was to discuss the declaration of two diplomats of the German Embassy in Moscow as persona non grata by the Russian Foreign Ministry. The move was a tit-for-tat response to an earlier decision made by Germany concerning the status of two Russian envoys in the Federal Republic.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said it had registered a ‘strong protest’ with Germany’s ambassador to Russia over the original expulsion of the Russian diplomats.

“Ambassador von Geyr took note of the communication and called the measure unfounded. He categorically rejected the accusations made by the Russian government that the verdict of the Berlin Higher District Court had been influenced politically,” the German Embassy in Moscow said.

On December 15, a Berlin court sentenced a Russian national to life imprisonment in the case of the 2019 murder of Zelimkhan Khangoshvili, a Georgian national of Chechen origin, in the German capital. According to the court ruling, the murder was allegedly committed on behalf of Russian state agencies. After the verdict was announced, the German Foreign Ministry declared two employees of the Russian Embassy persona non grata.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that von Geyr called the expulsion of the two Russian envoys “an appropriate reaction to the sentence handed down by the Berlin court.”

On December 16, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement rejecting accusations of the involvement of Russian state agencies in the murder of Khangoshvili.

“We firmly reject these unsubstantiated accusations which are completely disconnected from reality, of the involvement of Russian state structures in the murder of terrorist Z. Khangoshvili, who lived in Germany with the knowledge of the FRG authorities and was fabricated with the assistance of foreign special services and affiliated structures,” the statement reads.
