Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov criticised the United States for promoting its view of democracy, speaking in Moscow on Wednesday.

“After the bombing of Yugoslavia, Iraq, Libya, after a 20-year experiment in Afghanistan and other adventures, Washington’s attempts to usurp the right to determine the degree of democracy of this or that state look simply cynical,” the diplomat told the Federation Council.

He added it was “obvious that a course has been taken to create new dividing lines in international affairs,” as Washington prepares to host the ‘Summit for Democracy’ next week.

Russia’s top diplomat also discussed Turkey, saying that despite differences between Moscow and Ankara on several international issues “discussion of these differences and how to deal with these problems more effectively always takes place in a friendly, frank, mutually respectful manner.”
