Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow is currently not considering recognising the Taliban rule in Afghanistan, speaking on the sidelines of the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi on Tuesday.
“We are encouraging them to implement the statements they made when they came to power, including ensuring that the government is inclusive not only along ethnic lines but also along political lines so that the whole range of political beliefs of society is reflected in the structure of the government,” the minister commented as Russia prepares to host high-level talks on Afghanistan in Moscow on Wednesday.
Lavrov also went on to discuss Russia’s decision to suspend its diplomatic mission to NATO.
“NATO has simply buried the main rule underlying the creation of the NATO-Russia Council, which is the need to consult immediately in crisis situations,” the diplomat said, adding that “There has not been any information exchange even with the headquarters of the North Atlantic Alliance for a long time. And yes, most importantly, all military-to-military contacts have been cut off.”
Moscow announced on Monday it will completely suspend the operations of its mission to NATO by November.
