Russia: Moscow files complain against Ukraine with European Court

The Russian Federation appealed to the European Court of Human Rights for the first time in its history. On Thursday, Moscow filed an inter-state complaint against Ukraine under Article 33 of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.

“The complaint seeks to bring the attention of the European Court and the entire world community to the gross and systematic human rights violations committed by the Ukrainian authorities, and place numerous criminal acts on international legal record, make the Ukrainian authorities end these crimes, duly investigate them and promptly bring the perpetrators to justice, restore peace and accord on the territory of Ukraine,” said the statement of the Prosecutor General’s Office press-service.

The complaint was commented on by the first deputy chair of the Federation Council committee on foreign affairs Vladimir Dzhabarov.

He stated that “Russia has too many questions to present Ukrainian authorities” since 2014. According to Dzhabarov, the complaint will demonstrate the objectivity of the ECHR in decision making.

“In fact, this is a complaint of the state, this is not a complaint of a private person, which the ECHR usually likes to consider, this is a state application, application of state institutions,” he stressed.

Denys Maliuska, Minister of Justice of Ukraine, wrote on his Facebook account that Russia “from a legal point of view is going to face an imminent defeat.”

And in fact, this is a complaint of the state, this is not a complaint of a private person, which the ECHR usually likes to consider, this is a state application, application of state institutions. We have too many questions to present to Ukrainian authorities, starting from the Maidan, where people were shot and beaten, starting from Odesa, where innocent people were burnt alive. There are constant persecutions of dissenters, the prohibition of native language - for many people living in Ukraine it is Russian. There is a prohibition to study in Russian, this is the withdrawal of many Ukrainian citizens from participation in elections, especially from the south-east. There is, of course, an absolutely cruel cutting off the Crimea from the water supply through the North Crimean canals from the Dnieper. In fact, Ukraine repeats that it wants to return to Crimea, that it is occupied territory. But why do they deprive people to use the water, which is extremely important for Crimea? There is the constant persecution of people for dissent, there is constant persecution of our businessmen, of Russian companies that had been working there, the confiscation of property. And, of course, even the plane crash over Donbas, which happened in 2014. You know that Ukraine had to close the airspace. But didn’t. As a result, about 280 people died. This is a serious complaint, now we will see how the European Court of Human Rights is going to investigate the case and how the objective will be a decision. Because the latest laws adopted in Ukraine: the law on the indigenous peoples, where for some reason the Russians in Ukraine turned to be who knows what. Moreover, recalling the article recently published by our president, these lands, where the citizens of Ukraine now live: Malorossia, Novorossia, were parts of one big country, these peoples habituated there long before the formation of the Ukrainian nation. And the law on the language, which prohibits people from using the Russian language in all spheres: in school, in everyday life, and so on. The complaint is supported by exact facts, names will be considered. Some decision should follow in case of objective consideration.”
