Russia: Nord Stream 2 launches in few days - Lavrov

The construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline will be ‘completed in a few days and will start working,’ Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated at a public meeting in St. Petersburg on Monday.

“Currently there is a frontal attack, in spite of everything, that Nord Stream 2, everyone understands and the Americans have already understood, it will be completed in a few days and will start working”, Lavrov said.

The system of offshore natural gas pipelines running under the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany is a joint enterprise between Russia’s Gazprom and five EU-headquartered companies including Engie, Uniper, OMV, Shell and Wintershall.

The Nord Stream 2 project has been debated since its conception. In a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on August 22 in Kiev, Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Selenskyj called the pipeline a “dangerous geopolitical weapon of the Kremlin.”
