SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): “I would like to highlight that Germany remains one of our main partners both in Europe and in the world, thanks to your efforts as a Federal Chancellor during the last 16 years. Speaking of countries, Germany is our second biggest economic partner after China. Although we had a serious decline in 2020, we doubled our trade during the first six months [of 2021]. All the mechanisms, such as forums, [working] groups are underway. At the moment we are holding the Year of Germany in Russia, the year connected to the development of the economy. We keep in touch by phone. There are many issues that demand face-to-face discussions. So I am sure this will not only be your goodbye visit as a federal chancellor, as you decided not to seek a fifth term in office, but also a working visit.”

SOT, Angela Merkel, German Chancellor (German): “Thank you very much, Mr. President, dear Vladimir, for the reception here in the Kremlin. I am glad that we have a chance to meet once more, perhaps as you said it’s a goodbye visit but also a working visit. I should mention that 80 years ago Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union. I just laid a wreath to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to mark this day. Even though we certainly have deep differences today, we speak to each other and that’s how it should continue for the German-Russian relations going forward. We have a lot to talk about. Bilateral relations, but also questions regarding world politics, the Libyan conference, Afghanistan will surely be on the agenda today, but also our trade relations, our bilateral cooperation. We have busy talks ahead. I thank you for giving us this opportunity to meet.”
