Russian President Vladimir Putin said that ‘not one, not two,’ but ‘several dozen people’ from his entourage had tested positive for the coronavirus.
“Unfortunately, I had to cancel my visit to Dushanbe at the last moment. I am very sorry, but this is due to the fact that, as you know, cases of coronavirus have been detected in my entourage,” said Putin on Thursday addressing the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) summit participants via video conference from Novo-Ogaryovo.
“There are not one, not two but several dozen people. Now, I have to observe a self-isolation regime for several days,” he added.
Putin also expressed regret that he could not personally take part in the event and ‘shake hands, hug’ each of the summit participants.
Moreover, he said it was necessary to coordinate the efforts and unity of the CSTO countries to ensure security “after, to put it mildly, the hasty withdrawal of US troops and their allies from Afghanistan and the coming to power of the Taliban.”
“It is necessary to be ready at any time to fully use the defence and political potential of the CSTO to ensure security, maintain peace and stability in our countries,” Putin added.
SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): “Dear Emomali Sharipovich [Rahmon], dear friends, first of all, I join my colleagues in thanking the President of Tajikistan and all our Tajik friends for the active work carried out during the chairmanship of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation, as well as for the preparation of today’s meeting. You know that, unfortunately, I had to cancel my visit to Dushanbe at the last moment. I am very sorry, but this is due to the fact that, as you know, cases of coronavirus have been detected in my entourage. There are not one, not two but several dozen people. Now I have to observe a self-isolation regime for several days. Unfortunately, I cannot shake hands with each of you and hug you, but, of course, we are interested in participating, even remotely, in discussing the key tasks our organisation is facing. As already noted, the situation in the CSTO area of responsibility and on the external borders of the member states is not only unstable, but also carries new, really acute challenges and risks for the security of our countries. Immediately after, to put it mildly, the hasty withdrawal of US troops and their allies from Afghanistan and the coming to power of the Taliban, we exchanged views at an extraordinary CSTO summit on the dangers associated with the radically changed situation in this country. At that time, everyone supported the conclusion that in the current conditions, the closest coordination and cohesion of the CSTO member states is more in demand than ever. We also agreed that it is necessary to be ready at any time to fully use the defence and political potential of the CSTO to ensure security, maintain peace and stability in our countries.”
