Russia: RDIF and Serum Institute of India partner up to make Sputnik V

The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) reached a partnership agreement with the Serum Institute of India, the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer, RDIF CEO Kirill Dmitriev announced during an online briefing, on Tuesday.

“We reached a partnership agreement with Serum Institute of India, the largest producer of vaccines in the world, to manufacture Sputnik V. And this will start as soon as September when we expect that the first batches of Sputnik will be manufactured by Serum Institute in India,” said Dmitriev.

He stressed the importance that the “technological transfer process has already begun, and the Indian regulator has already approved importation all of the necessary elements, and cultivation already in Serum Institute has started”.

Dmitriev added this will allow the production of 300 million doses a year of the vaccine.

The RDIF CEO also mentioned the joint research with AstraZeneca conducted in various countries.

“So we were also the first to start mix and match trial with AstraZeneca that is finishing up in Azerbaijan and some other countries. And we expect to release the results of this mix and match trial of Sputnik and AstraZeneca in the next two weeks by the end of July. So we are open to a mix and match approach with the Covishield vaccine in India. We believe that it can produce great results. And frankly, it’s, Covishield is the same that AstraZeneca vaccine, so we believe that trials in Azerbaijan will show high effect at this approach,” he said.
