SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Alexei Zaretsky, refugee (Russian): “What’s happening there? Military operations are conducted in residential quarters. Do you understand? In residential quarters, where people live, there are military operations. That’s it. I have nothing more to say.”
Reporter (Russian): “Is it true that the Armed Forces of Ukraine don’t allow civilians to leave, because they hide behind them?” *UPSOUND*
Alexei Zaretsky (Russian): “Positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine after retreat were in residential quarters.”
Reporter (Russian): “How did you escape? Are you yourself from Mariupol?” *UPSOUND*
Alexei Zaretsky (Russian): “How did we escape? We stayed there till the last. [We left] with the help of DPR military personnel. Guys pull us out and said that it would be tough, and the civilians should leave.”

SOT, Alexei Zaretsky, refugee (Russian): “[The evacuation] went well, if I can say so. Firstly, the guys from DPR escorted us through military positions, which were shelled. Literally, pull old ladies by the arm. In safer areas, closer to the homefront, cars helped. And then it was more organised.”

SOT, Maxim Chernyshev, refugee (Russian): “No, I’m from near Mariupol. They don’t let [people] out from Mariupol.”
Reporter (Russian): “Do you think you were lucky? How were you evacuated?” *UPSOUND*
Maxim Chernyshev (Russian): “Yes, we were lucky. If it [military equipment] stands near your yard, it’s no good.”

SOT Julia Zaretskaya, refugee (Russian): “They said there was a green light, Mariupol [residents] can go to Zaporozhye by cars, but I don’t know for sure. Reportedly, they didn’t let them through, they didn’t let [them] go to the Zaporozhye highway.”
Reporter (Russian): “Don’t they [Armed Forces of Ukraine] them [civilians] to go to Russia?” *UPSOUND*
Julia Zaretskaya (Russian): “Well, we were escorted to Russia by soldiers.”
Reporter (Russian): “Do you leave near the border, right? *UPSOUND*
Julia Zaretskaya (Russian): “It’s Mariupol and the passage near the Kholodets [settlement].”
Reporter (Russian): “How were you evacuated? Did they knock and say: “Come out”? How was it?” *UPSOUND*
Julia Zaretskaya (Russian): “Soldiers of DPR walked around the village and told us that it’s better to evacuate. We wouldn’t have survived the next night.”

SOT, Yuri Khobyak, civil defense specialist (Russian): “[We need to] register people, take them into account, tell them what their next steps are, place them in the centre. Now the main thing for us is to take them into account, collect lists, photocopy documents, because it there will be payments later, so that we can clearly know about payments.”
