More than 1.5 million people have fled Ukraine, according to the UN.

Officials described it as Europe’s “fasting growing refugee crisis since World War II”.

A humanitarian corridor was set up for the residents of Mariupol during a temporary ceasefire agreed between Russian and Ukrainian authorities.

However, Russian officials said not a single civilian had been able to escape.
