Russia: Relatives, locals mourn victims of Tatarstan plane crash

Relatives and local residents ​​gathered outside the Menzelinsk’s flying club, in Russia’s Tatarstan, to pay tribute to the victims who were killed after a club’s plane crashed on Sunday killing 16 people.

A family member of crashed plane commander Mikhail Belyaev said they found out about the tragedy from the news and immediately drove to the flying club. They described Belyaev as an experienced pilot who “always followed the instructions”.

A local Zulfiya Garayeva said that Menzelinsk’s citizens were always proud of the flying club therefore the accident is a tragedy for the whole region.

In his turn, the first deputy chief of the Republic of Tatarstan President’s staff Ilnur Garipov added that the bodies of the dead would soon be delivered to the pathological department of the hospital in a nearby town - Naberezhnye Chelny. He also noted that psychologists will work with the relatives of the deceased.

As reported by the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, an L-410 plane with parachutists on board made a hard landing, crashing with 22 people on board, 20 of which were parachute divers.

According to the Russian Ministry of Health, 16 of these people died and the other six were hospitalised in serious conditions.

Russian authorities have launched a probe into the crash, with L-410 plane flights suspended until the end of the proceedings.
