Russia: Sixth accused of poisoning with surrogate alcohol taken into custody in Orenburg region

A court in Orsk on Sunday detained a sixth person accused of involvement in a criminal case of illegal alcohol trafficking in the Orenburg region that led to a mass poisoning.

According to the press service of the court, the suspect is accused of “producing, storing, transporting or selling goods and products, performing work or providing services that do not meet safety requirements, which inadvertently resulted in the death of two or more persons.”

The court granted the request of the preliminary investigation bodies to choose a preventive measure for the accused in the form of a two-month detention.

According to the regional Ministry of Health, 64 people were admitted to hospitals in the Orenburg region, 34 of whom died, and 25 survivors are in serious condition, as a result of consuming the prohibited alcohol.

According to the regional Prosecutor’s Office, as a result of mass checks in 11 districts of the Orenburg region, around 800 bottles of illegal alcohol have been seized over the past two days.
