Russia: Drone footage reveals Irkutsk shrouded in smoke due to forest fires

Drone footage recorded on Monday revealed the streets and sights of Irkutsk covered with smoke.

The capital of the region has been wrapped in smoke due to the incessant forest fires.

According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Irkutsk region, smoke is observed in 438 settlements in 14 districts of the region.

The department added that no excess of the maximum permissible concentration of hazardous substances was recorded.

The governor of the Irkutsk region, Igor Kobzev, said on Monday that the situation with smoke in the region will not change in the next three days.

“Taking into account the fact that the weather is calm, that everything that has caused remains here, this gives a very bad picture related to the spread of smoke. We asked to closely monitor the situation for the next three days, it has not changed yet,” Kobzev said.

The press service of the Irkutsk airport reported that due to the smoke, the work of the air harbour was partially suspended. Several flights were cancelled.

Active forest fires have also been recorded in the region. According to data on Sunday, August 8, the fire spread to an area of more than 123 thousand hectares. The forces of the Ministry of Forestry and the Ministry of Defence are involved in extinguishing the fires.
