The Russian President’s Special Envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentiev arrived in Geneva on Tuesday afternoon amid the ongoing 6th round of Syrian Constitutional Committee negotiations.

Lavrentiev is expected to hold meetings with participants of the constitutional talks on the sidelines of the current session taking place in the Swiss city. On Tuesday afternoon the Russian official is due to hold negotiations with the UN special envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen at the Palais des Nations.

On Sunday, Lavrentiev, and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin were received by Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus to discuss cooperation between the two countries in fighting terrorism, as well as in the economic and commercial fields.

The recent round of talks on Syria’s new constitution kicked off on Monday and is expected to last until Friday. Its participants will be discussing constitutional principles and are then scheduled to start drafting a constitution.

The Syrian Constitutional Committee was formed in 2019, comprising 150 men and women, with the government, opposition groups and members of civil society each nominating 50 people. This larger group established a 45-member smaller body, consisting of 15 representatives from each of the three sectors.
