Russia's representative Nebenzya accuses US of 'hysteria' over Ukraine in Security Council meeting

The UN Security Council held a meeting on Monday in New York City, during which the Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya accused the US of “[whipping] up hysteria about “the allegedly impending Russian aggression.”

“The open format proposed by the US, coupled with the extremely provocative theme of the meeting, makes the requested meeting a classic example of megaphone diplomacy, a work for the public, which we need to abandon as we all have repeatedly reiterated,” stressed Nebenzya.

“We are well aware that the desire of our American colleagues to whip up hysteria around their own statements about the allegedly impending Russian aggression, including from the rostrum of the Security Council, puts our colleagues in the Security Council in an extremely uncomfortable position.”

On Friday, January 28, the meeting was called a “clear PR stunt” by Russia’s deputy ambassador to the UN Dmitry Polyanskiy. The US says Russia’s buildup of troops along its border with Ukraine threatens international peace and security.

Earlier on Friday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia had no intention to attack Ukraine and “does not want war” and is ready to have a dialogue with President Zelensky.
