Seehofer dismisses criticism of government actions amid record flooding in Germany.

Firefighters and locals continued to clean up villages devastated by the floods, as the German government came under fire over its warning system.

At least 160 people died in the worst flooding Germany experienced in decades and 170 people are still missing.

Opposition politicians criticised federal and state authorities, saying the country must prepare better for disasters.

Many residents were apparently caught off guard by the downpour, as warning messages seemingly did not reach everyone.

Interior Minister Horst Seehofer dismissed the criticism. “The warning alarm worked without any technical issue, both from the German weather service and the European one. I have to say anyway, let’s go step by step. Everything the critics voiced so far has a taste of election campaign for me,” said Seehofer.

Residents say they were unprepared for the severity of the situation.

One resident said, “We should have learnt from this mistake in 2016, that what happened can happen, but nobody expected it on such a scale here.”
