Seoul rally demands more labour safety measures after student killed during vocational training

South Korean students rallied in Seoul on Sunday to demand better security conditions at the vocational educations centres, after Korean student Hong Jeong-Woo died during a diving operation to remove barnacles from a sunken vessel.

“He didn’t die because of his own mistake, he died because of non-compliance of safety regulations and the Labor Standards Act. It was dangerous diving work. Even though this student was afraid of water, he was compelled to do it because the company president ordered it,” said a protester Lee So-Young.

South Korea has the third-highest rates of industrial accidents in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) member countries, only surpassed by Mexico and Turkey.
