Several hundred people took the streets of Belgrade on Saturday in an LGBTQ+ parade. This year’s parade, held under the slogan “Love rules” marked 20 years since Belgrade’s first gay parade which ended in scuffles with police, anti-LGBT protesters, and the LGBT activists, leaving hundreds injured and arrested.

Today’s parade was attended by international representatives from all over Europe.

Hundreds of special police forces were deployed across the city centre to protect the event, blocking the streets around the parade.

A few hundred meters away, two anti-LGBTQ protests were held at the same time. The smaller protest was held by orthodox religious groups that held up crucifixes and chanted religious songs, while a bigger protest, compiled of right-wing, anti-COVID, and anti-LBGT organisations, had several thousand people taking part in. They burnt the LGBTQ+ flag and tried to break through the police fence which separated them from the LGBTQ+ parade.

No other incidents have been reported.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Dusica, Anti-LGBT protester (Serbian): “We are here precisely because of that. Because that is not natural and ruins the natural family order. It is basically not natural and we are here to oppose that.”

SOT, Petar, Anti-LGBT protester (Serbian): “We are here to promote family values, as opposed to these perverts who promote unhealthy and immoral things.”

SOT, Srba, Anti-LGBT protester (Serbian): “Sodomy and Gomorah cannot walk freely in Belgrade. This is the land of Saint Sava. This country was once led and conquered by kings and saints. Nowadays, we allowed ourselves to be governed by gays and lesbians.”

SOT, Damjan Knezevic, Protest organiser (Serbian): “What is being imposed on our children must stop. We are a traditional, family- oriented Serbia. We don’t have any problems with other people living their lives however they want, but we don’t want somebody posing conditions and we don’t want anybody imposing those things on our children.”
