Serbia: Thousands protest air pollution in Belgrade

Thousands of people gathered to protest against increasing levels of air pollution in Belgrade on Sunday.

Protesters marched through the city centre carrying banners and signs.

Demonstrators are demanding transparency from the government, closure of landfills and increased monitoring of the factories responsible for most of the pollution.

“​​I am here today because the air in our city has become unbearable during the last few years and we probably know what the reason for that is. So, I expect that our country will finally come to its senses and change towards cleaner fuels or at least the cleaner coal,” explained Ivan, a protester at Sunday’s march.

​This is the third protest organised by various climate action groups, first being in January and a second in September. Protests started after air pollution abruptly increased in the past few years placing Belgrade at the top of world’s most polluted cities.

SOT, Nikola, Protester: “I think I would like to see some real change and for the first time maybe someone from the government is going to think about the environment and not just their pockets and hopefully we will manage to save Serbia from being sold to big corporations and other countries.”

SOT, Dejana, Protester: ” Well first of all I am here because of my son and my family, and long time ago this started in Serbia but we weren’t informed about the situation, about the health of this air, and what we are breathing from winter to winter. And it’s finally time for us to speak up and to stand up because the state has to do something about the quality of the air that we are breathing. I expect that more and more people come every time, maybe somebody will hear our voice , maybe the pressure from out of the state will help us achieve something.”

SOT, Ivan, Protester: “I am here today because the air in our city has become unbearable, during the last few years and we probably know what the reason for that is. So, I expect that our country will finally come to its senses and change towards cleaner fuels or at least the cleaner coal comparing to what we are using now and also besides that to stop being greedy and exploiting our natural resources and polluting the environment for the very small profit.”

SOT, Maja, Protester (Serbian): “We are here to fight for the clean air and water, for our children, for their future. We, the old ones will survive somehow, this is for them.”
