Serbia: Protesters block Belgrade streets against referendum and expropriation laws

Thousands protesters blocked the Gazela bridge, a major traffic artery in the centre of Belgrade, on Saturday, as part of a demonstration against recent laws on referendums and expropriations.

Similar actions took place in other Serbian cities such as Novi Sad, Sabac, Jagodina, Kragujevac. Citizens were chanting “Treason” and “Serbia is not for sale”.

Serbia’s special police force, the Gendarmerie, was deployed on the highway trying to stop people from blocking traffic, though no major scuffles were reported. Serbian Interior Ministry Aleksandar Vulin was present with police forces.

The protest comes after the Serbian parliament passed laws removing turnout thresholds in referendums and enabling the government to forcibly seize private property.

SOT, Milan Grahovac, Protester (Serbian): “I came here to stop something that last for too long and which we have had enough , especially now when the Law on expropriation and referendum has been passed. The new law on expropriation is aimed to seizing our father’s and grand-father’s land within eight days if that land is of public interested. According to the old law, that wasn’t constitutional.”

SOT, Jasna Mihajlovic, Protester (Serbian): “It bothers me that we are [an] occupied country, everything is known, everybody is aware of everything, yet everybody keeps quiet, I want to ask something: where are you, mothers of Serbia? What kind o country you want to leave to your children, to your offspring. Go out, mothers of Serbia.”

SOT, Jelena Davinic, Protester (Serbian): “Do we have any other option? Do we have any other option? I don’t think so. We need [to] protest from hearts, from love, not the destructive protests, I am here because I love, not because I hate.”
