An unstable crane began spinning out of control atop a skyscraper amid high winds in Manhattan, New York City.

As it was hitting the building repeatedly, the crane sent debris plummeting to the ground from an 84-storey tower under construction in Midtown.

Authorities closed off several surrounding streets, but no injuries have been reported.

Although the crane is designed to spin in the wind, officials are trying to determine what caused debris to fall.
