Phylum - Arthropoda; Subphylum - Crustacea; Class - Malacostraca; Order - Decapoda
Deca means “ten” and pod means “foot”, therefore the term Decapoda describes these creatures as being ten footed. In addition to shrimp, crabs and lobsters are also decapods.
However, the Mantis shrimp seen in this video are not decapods but belong to the order Stomatopoda.
Unlike crabs, decapod shrimp are long and slender. They have two bulbous eyes on stalks which have panoramic vision and are also used to detect movement. Most have two pairs of antennae with sensors, one pair typically being very long. As well as legs attached to their carapace, which they use for walking, they have additional so-called swimming legs or pleopods attached to their abdomen, which some also use for brooding eggs and for other purposes.
The shrimp in this video were identified according to the book:
Debelius, H. (2001). Crustacea Guide of the World (2nd ed.). IKAN - Unterwasserarchiv.
