The welcoming ceremony and subsequent service was attended by thousands of faithful who greeted the pope by cheering and waving Vatican flags.
Prior to his visit in Slovakia, the 84-year-old pontiff held a mass on the closing day of the International Eucharist Congress in neighbouring Hungary.
