Cape Town’s City Hall was illuminated in purple lights, on Tuesday, as South Africans commemorated anti-apartheid campaigner Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
The South African capital honoured the Noble Prize-winning civil rights activist by lighting up the city hall and Table Mountain in purple, a colour associated with the late archbishop who passed away on Sunday at the age of 90.
“I think this initiative is very important and it’s very good cause it’s a memorable thing that has happened in South Africa for the archbishop,” said resident Jessie Amechi.
“The archbishop Desmond Tutu was a morally upright person, distinguished human being, a respectful and respectable human being, one in a million. A man who symbolised dignity and integrity, perhaps the most respected person,” said another citizen about the religious leader, who spent his life advocating for civil rights and fighting Apartheid, inequality and corruption.
The landmark illumination was started at 20:00 local time (18:00 GMT) on Sunday and will continue every night this week.

SOT, Jessie Amechi, Citizen: “I think this is very symbolical for the lighting up of the light cause we’re giving, we give the arch a very good thing. It’s a memorable thing to know that the archbishop was here in Cape Town and we’re now remembering him, that he is one of the people that fought for South African rights. And now we are remembering him in this theme of bringing everybody together and lighting up the light in purple which was one of his colours that he used to wear. So I think this initiative is very important and it’s very good cause it’s a memorable thing that has happened in South Africa for the archbishop.”

SOT, Citizen: “The archbishop Desmond Tutu was a morally upright person, distinguished human being, a respectful and respectable human being, one in a million. A man who symbolised dignity and integrity, perhaps the most respected person.”

SOT, Citizen: “I feel he was a great man. He was not scared to say anything and he just said what he wanted to say straight and direct. And I think I admired his courage most of all.”
