Busy scenes took place at Johannesburg airport on Saturday as airlines cancelled their flights to a number of countries following new restrictions placed on travelling from South Africa due to the detection of a new variant of COVID-19.

The new variant, known as ‘Omicron’ (B.1.1.529), was classed on Thursday as a ‘variant of concern’ by the World Health Organization (WHO) and contains “a large number of mutations, some of which are concerning.”

According to the WHO, preliminary evidence suggests the variant poses an “increased risk” of reinfection compared to other variants of concern.

The variant was first reported to the WHO in South Africa on November 24.

As a response to the emergence of the new virus, the European Commission on Friday announced a new set of restrictions on access into the EU from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique and Namibia. In a similar move, the UK added ten countries to its red list.

Instances of the new variant have already been detected across a number of European countries.
