South Africa: UK-bound flights cancelled after COVID variant ban comes into effect

Scores of Britons flooded the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg in a desperate rush to get home after the UK temporarily banned flights from six African countries, including South Africa, amid concerns over a new COVID-19 variant identified as B.1.1.529.
Many were greeted by cancelled flights at the airport.
The B.1.1.529. the Omicron variant, first identified in South Africa has also been recorded in Botswana, Hong Kong and Israel.
The WHO has designated the Omicron variant as “of concern,” the organisations most serious level.
