Israel has imposed a travel ban on foreigners and stricter quarantine for Israelis arriving from many African nations, as outlined by Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett at a press conference in Tel Aviv on Friday.

A number of cases of the new B.1.1.529 variant which was first identified in South Africa have already been recorded in Israel.

“All African countries, including Mauritius, Seychelles and Madagascar, with the exception of North African countries, are defined from this moment as red countries. Israelis returning from these countries will be in particularly tight quarantine. There will be increased enforcement on the quarantined,” explained Israeli Prime Minister, Naftali Bennett.

Forty-three percent of Israel’s population has received three doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

But the most important thing is to keep the citizens of Israel protected until we know better what the nature of the variant is. If it turns out to be nothing terrible as we thought it might be, we will soon return the situation to its former state and back to our current routine. But right now we are preparing for any scenario, including the worst.
