South Africa: Memorial service at Johannesburg's St Mary's Cathedral pays tribute to Tutu

The Mayor of the City of Johannesburg Dr Mpho Phalatse was among the notable figures who attended a memorial service for the late Desmond Tutu at the city’s St Mary’s Cathedral on Thursday.

Family members and religious leaders spoke at the service remembering Archbishop Tutu and lit candles in honour of the late human rights advocate.

“He is one of the bishops that became an example of what it means to be a Christian, it meant that you have got to work for all people to be equal before God,” Sipho Masimola, an acquaintance of Tutu said before the service.

Tutu was an outspoken apartheid critic and campaigned for racial equality. In 1984 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work for human rights.
