Aerial means and several firefighting vehicles headed to the area affected by the forest fire in Roses, Catalonia, on Tuesday, a day after around 400 hectares of land began to burn, near the Parc Natural del Cap de Creus.

Shrubs, trees and grassy slopes were charred and devastated by the flames, which were fuelled by the strong Tramuntana wind and the dry state of the vegetation due to the drought.

At least 15 people had to be evacuated from their homes after being alerted to the fire, which is reported to have started in an area near the Mas Oliva housing estate in Roses.

“At 12 o’clock at night, you’re like watching a movie,” a local resident said. “You go out on the balcony, you can hear the fireman’s sirens wailing, and you can see the whole mountain burning, everything burnt, everyone in the street, everyone on the balconies, fire engines passing by, police passing by,” she recalled.

Initial investigations point to a badly extinguished vegetation fire as the origin of the blaze.

SOT, Neighbour of area affected by forest fire (Spanish): “At 12 o’clock at night, you’re like watching a movie, you go out on the balcony, you hear firemen’s sirens wailing, and you go out to the mountain and you see the whole mountain burning, everything burned, everybody on the street, everybody on the balconies and passing fire trucks, passing police, and like the movie you’re watching, you know? Like a movie, well, the same.”

SOT, Neighbour of area affected by forest fire (Spanish): “Because I have my business just after Montjoi and of course, now it’s like, the fire has passed between where I live, between, above this urbanisation and after Montjoi, so of course, I don’t know if it’s OK or not or how the business is because of course, they don’t let you pass, it’s all cut off.”

SOT, Neighbour of area affected by forest fire (Catalan): “[inaudible], it’s a spectacular [wind from] the Tramuntana this year, very, very strong and [inaudible].”
