The Cumbre Vieja volcano eruption continued to affect land and properties on La Palma, in Spain’s Canary Islands on Sunday, marking three weeks since the start of the eruption which started on September 19.
Images shot on location show large portions of burned land and burned properties including houses and cars.
“The fire started up there, in El Paso, I don’t know where exactly, and followed a strange route downward, because of the wind and the high temperatures, it was more than 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees F),” said Luis, a resident.
According to local reports, 80 million cubic metres of magma have been expelled from the volcano since its eruption on September 19, causing the evacuation of about 6,000 people and leaving thousands of buildings damaged or destroyed.
SOT, Luis, Resident (Spanish): We had to escape, we had to destroy an electric door we had there because it wouldn’t open, we had to run with the dogs, my girlfriend and there were three more people, also a kid, we had to escape. We also called the Guardia Civil because they got trapped in a car. The fire started up there, in El Paso, I don’t know where exactly, and followed a strange route downward, because of the wind and the high temperatures, it was more than 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees F).”
SOT, Luis, Resident (Spanish): “Here, it burned two apartments, a greenhouse and a van owned by my father. Down here thirty hunting dogs were locked there, maybe some sheep too, all those cars, they use them for work. I don’t know, they burned. Also an old house over there, lands with straw, more new cars that people lost, avocado trees, banana trees that were also affected by the heat itself.”
SOT, Luis, Resident (Spanish): “It was a month ago and now suddenly we were scared at first, because it seems like it’s very close, but we’re some kilometres away, we’re safe. So far, the ashes reached us but some other people are facing much worse situations, they lost their homes. We might get affected, especially my father and my family.”
SOT, Luis, Resident (Spanish): “It’s like movie, so to speak. You wake up everyday, make some coffee and you see a volcano here, roaring, I don’t know, I have no words. It’s fear, it’s something brutal, impressive to see, but two seconds after that you realise it’s next to your house and that it’s not a movie, it might reach us here. I don’t think that would happen,
but maybe, I have no words. My father, my grandmother who’s seen two volcanos,
told me how they lived it. And now, even though there’s so much information and things, we might be affected and we can’t do much.”
