The Spanish government declared the Canary island of La Palma a zone of catastrophe during a press conference held in Madrid on Tuesday.
Spokesperson Isabel Rodriguez said that the island would be considered “an area seriously affected by a civil protection emergency” after the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano.
She has also announced a package of economic aid for the residents of La Palma who have been affected by the eruption.
The lava flowing from Cumbre Vieja has covered more than 250 hectares and destroyed almost 700 buildings, forcing the evacuation of some 6,000 people.
