Personnel from the Emergency Military Unit (UME) gas detection team monitored at early hours of Monday the advance of the lava towards the sea, as they collected magma samples to analyse volcano data.

On Monday the Cumbre Vieja volcano resumed its activity after a brief stop, and uncertainty about its evolution increases as the lava flows continue to advance, with some sources reporting that it could reach the sea later on Monday.

Since it started erupting on September 19, the volcano emits between 6,000 and 9,000 tons of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere daily, according to estimates from the Canary Islands Volcanological Institute.

The buildings affected exceed 500, and more than 6,000 people had to be evacuated.
