Lava, ash and smoke were seen spewing from La Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma island in Spain’s Canary Islands on Monday.

The volcano erupted on Sunday evening for the first time in 50 years, leading to mass evacuations on the archipelago and substantial damage to property.

The volcano had been under close surveillance for days by local authorities due to increased seismic activity. By Monday evening, over 100 homes had been destroyed and over 5,000 residents were forced to leave their houses due to the disaster.

The Canary Islands last experienced a volcanic eruption underwater in 2011 on the El Hierro island south of La Palma.
