Palma de Mallorca airport was closed for several hours on Friday evening due to the escape of passengers from a flight from Morocco that made an emergency landing due to a medical emergency.

Airport activity was suspended at 20:20 local time)after a Royal Air Maroc flight from Casablanca to Istanbul made an emergency landing at the Spanish airport due to the health condition of a passenger.

While the aircraft remained parked, around twenty people took advantage of the moment when the sick person was being transferred to get off the aircraft and flee across the runways, forcing the airport to close.

The Guardia Civil and National Police were deployed in the area to locate the passengers who left the aircraft and are investigating the motives for the incident, without ruling out that it could be a planned operation to enter Spain irregularly.

According to local reports, at least 11 people have been arrested, including the passenger who simulated a diabetic coma, who was taken to hospital and released after undergoing a medical examination.

The closure of the Mallorcan airport affected around 50 domestic and international flights.
