Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez visited the town of Pradilla on Tuesday, which has been affected by recent floods due to a rise of water levels in the Ebro river.

“We are going to be there to act, working to alleviate the serious consequences that [the floods] had on crops, on day-to-day life, on the homes of many of the affected neighbours, as soon as possible, immediately,” said Sanchez.

“I said it yesterday, I reiterate it here today, next Friday we are going to declare it as a catastrophic zone, that’s how it is called in colloquial terms, in technical terms it is an area seriously affected by a civil protection emergency, but we are going to do it this on Friday,” added Sanchez.

The rising of the Ebro river has flooded a large number of towns located along its flow.

Water levels increased by 9 metres (30 feet) in some towns, while in Zaragoza, the capital of Aragon, it exceeded 5 metres (16 feet).

Dozens of people have been affected and evacuated due to the floods, caused by heavy torrential rains. The floods have claimed at least two lives to date.

The authorities have been forced to carry out containment work to minimise its consequences.

I said it yesterday, I reiterate it here today, next Friday we are going to declare it as a catastrophic zone, that’s how it is called in colloquial terms, in technical terms it is an area seriously affected by a civil protection emergency, but we are going to do it this on Friday to provide all the vehicles that the general administration of the state has, in order to respond as soon as possible and alleviate the serious consequences of these floods, and try, at least as much as possible, so that the neighbours recover their daily routine as soon as possible.”
