Spain: Protesters march through Madrid condemning Cuban government

Hundreds of protesters attended the rally against the Cuban government in Madrid.

Venezuelan opposition leader, Leopoldo Lopez and the Cuban rapper Yotuel, also attended, as well as Spanish politicians.

“I was born in a country without freedom to reunite or associated, without a right to strike without freedom of speech, I was born in Cuba,” one protester declared.

The latest events in Cuba, where there were several protests on July 11 in major cities, as well as in Havana itself, led to international condemnation towards the Cuban government. It also ignited the opposition at home and abroad to a large extent.

In Madrid, there is an important Cuban community, of which many do not support the revolutionary government of Miguel Diaz-Canel.

SOT, Demonstrator (Spanish): “I was born in a country where just because being homosexual was punished being sent to labour camps and where, even today, they’re exclude and there’s no right to equal marriage, where lesbian women who share their lives have no right to get inseminated and have a family.”

SOT, Demonstrator (Spanish): “I come from a country, where children have to repeat ‘Fatherland or Death,’ ‘Socialism or death’, pioneers for communism, we will be like Che. And the whole education equals to a ferocious indoctrination with a single line of thought, that cannot be called into question in public, because it is considered an ideological issue.”

SOT, Demonstrator (Spanish): “I was born in a country whose government’s, in the last years, decided to invest only in weapons for the army and building hotels and deviated the healthcare resources for this. A country where people are dying everyday because of avoidable diseases, where being able to get a painkiller became a luxury. I was born in a country without freedom to reunite or associated, without a right to strike without freedom of speech, I was born in Cuba.”
