Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, said that Puigdemont “has to appear and submit to justice,” following the arrest of the former president of the Catalan government in Sardinia.

Sanchez stressed that the government respects “all judicial proceedings that are opened in Spain, in Europe, in this case in Italy,” during his speech from La Palma on Friday.

The Spanish prime minister added that dialogue with Catalonia is “the only way to be able to reconnect the different Catalans who think differently and also the Catalans with all the compatriots who live in other parts of Spain.”

The former president of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, was arrested on Thursday on the Italian island of Sardinia in compliance with the Spanish Supreme Court’s search and arrest warrant.

Puigdemont arrived on the island to take part in a Catalan folklore event being held this weekend in the town of L’Alghero.

Hundreds of people rallied outside the Italian Consulate in Barcelona on Friday morning to call for the release of former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Pedro Sanchez, Spanish Prime Minister (Spanish): “We must remember that when Carles Puigdemont fled from justice there was another government, and this government has always maintained the same position. Firstly, respect for all judicial proceedings that are opened in Spain, in Europe, in this case in Italy. And, without a doubt, respect for and compliance with the judicial decisions that may be taken in this regard in Italy. And secondly, what is clear is that Carles Puigdemont must appear and submit to justice.”

SOT, Pedro Sanchez, Spanish Prime Minister (Spanish): “I also said it in Barcelona when I was in the last of my visits, in the meeting I had with the President of the Generalitat of Catalonia, today more than ever it is important to demand dialogue, because dialogue is the only way for different Catalans who think differently and also for Catalans with all of our compatriots who live in other parts of Spain to be able to meet again.”

SOT, Pedro Sanchez, Spanish Prime Minister (Spanish): “And dialogue is even more necessary today, it was ten years ago, it was in 2017, it is today and it will be in the future, therefore the message I want to convey is one of commitment, and of vindication, today even more so, of dialogue between the different administrations so that the Catalans can overcome the trauma that 2017 represented.”
