Spain: 'Puigdemont must appear and face justice' - Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, said that Puigdemont “has to appear and submit to justice,” following the arrest of the former president of the Catalan government in Sardinia.

Sanchez stressed that the government respects “all judicial proceedings that are opened in Spain, in Europe, in this case in Italy,” during his speech from La Palma on Friday.

The Spanish prime minister added that dialogue with Catalonia is “the only way to be able to reconnect the different Catalans who think differently and also the Catalans with all the compatriots who live in other parts of Spain.”

The former president of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, was arrested on Thursday on the Italian island of Sardinia in compliance with the Spanish Supreme Court’s search and arrest warrant.

Puigdemont arrived on the island to take part in a Catalan folklore event being held this weekend in the town of L’Alghero.

Hundreds of people rallied outside the Italian Consulate in Barcelona on Friday morning to call for the release of former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont.

Firstly, respect for all judicial proceedings that are opened in Spain, in Europe, in this case in Italy. And secondly, what is clear is that Carles Puigdemont must appear and submit to justice.”
