Pro-Catalan independence protesters are gathering in Barcelona on Friday, September 24, following the detention of the former President of Catalonia Carles Puigdemont in Sardinia the day before. According to his defence team, Puigdemont has since been released by Italian court, but must remain on the Italian island while an extradition request from Spain is being considered.

The arrest was carried out under a Spanish international warrant on charges related to the 2017 independence referendum. Puigdemont was reportedly due to attend a folk festival on Friday and meet with pro-Catalan independence mayors and councillors in Sardinia.
