Spain: Hundreds of people gather near the Italian consulate to demand the release of Puigdemont

Hundreds of people demonstrated on Friday outside the Italian consulate in Barcelona to demand the release of former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont.

The protest was called by the Catalan National Assembly (ANC) and is supported by the Committees for the Defence of the Republic (CDR).

Puigdemont was arrested on Thursday night on the Italian island of Sardinia. He was the subject of an arrest warrant issued by Spain’s Supreme Court.

The Carabinieri arrested him on his arrival on the island, and he will later be brought before a court to decide on his release or extradition to Spain.
