Spain: Residents rush to evacuate as lava ravages La Palma after volcano erupts

Residents of La Palma rushed to evacuate as lava from the Cumbre Vieja volcano ravaged everything in its path on Tuesday.

The evacuation operation in could be seen underway in Todoque, a town of about 1,300 inhabitants in the southwest of the island of La Palma.

Residents were rushing to save their belongings before the magma engulfs them in its unstoppable advance towards the sea.

Firefighters and members of Spain’s Military Emergency Unit are assisting local residents in the evacuation operation.

The Cumbre Vieja volcano erupted on Sunday, so far the lava covers 106 hectares and has destroyed 106 houses in its path. More than 5,000 residents have been evacuated, many of whom have lost their homes.
