Images taken by the Volcanology Institute of the Canary Islands captured a river of lava flowing down El Hoyo Todoque Road, La Palma, on Sunday.
The lava flowed rapidly down the street as volcanologists studied the seismicity using spectroscopy to estimate the composition of the volcanic plume.
Despite the spectacular images of the lava sweeping away everything in its path, the Cumbre Vieja volcano’s seismicity declined late on Saturday after 11 weeks of emissions and the appearance of a new eruption on Friday.
The lava flow that emerged on Friday to the north of the Cogote Mountain has joined the lava flow named as ‘flow 9,’ and it has carried away some houses, according to Pevolca (Canary Islands Volcanic Emergency Plan) technical director Miguel Angel Morcuende.
According to reports, 1,155 hectares (2,854 acres) of land has now been devastated by the lava flows.
