Dozens of protesters rallied outside the Ministry of Industry in Madrid on Monday to protest against the redundancies at the Pilkington factory of Sagunto, Valencia.
Pilkington, a supplier of glass parts for the auto industry, announced the redundancy of over 100 workers which has, in turn, led to strike action in early November.
“We’ve been saying it for months, that the PERTE (Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation) they presented in Moncloa, in mid July, on the car electrification and decarbonisation of the mobility chain,” said Garbine Espejo, the secretary general of the Trade Union Confederation of Workers’ Commissions in Industry (CCOO Industria).
“First, if they don’t count with the unions, because we’ve denounced that this PERTE was one-sided by the Ministry (Ministry of Industry), and that we the workers of the sector are already suffering the consequences of this PERTE without a social perspective,” added Espejo.
According to Espejo, at least fifteen thousand jobs have been lost in Spain since July due to increased prices of raw materials and a semiconductor shortage.
“Today they’re with us, our colleagues from Pilkington, where, if nobody stops it, the production will surely go to Poland and we’ll have to again place our hands on our heads when we say that in Spain we can’t serve the auto companies, for example, with windshields,” warned Espejo.
The strike at the Pilkington factory is currently set to go on until December 3.
