Stand Back and Stand By: Is Donald Trump Encouraging the Proud Boys?

Donald Trump has now said far-right group Proud Boys should “stand down”, after a controversial TV debate in which he refused to explicitly condemn them.

During the debate, when asked about the group’s role in the summer of violence in some US cities, President Trump urged them to “stand back and stand by.”

Proud Boys is an anti-immigrant, white supremacist, all-male group founded in 2016.

They have a history of street violence, especially against left-wing counter-demonstrators and the press.

A recent Proud Boys rally in Portland drew about 1,000 supporters, a much smaller crowd than the 10,000 people authorities were expecting.

But the US President’s comments during the debate have boosted the group’s activity on social media.

Just a day after the debate with Joe Biden took place, President Trump has said “I don’t know who the Proud Boys are.”
