Heavy rainfall and flooding continued for a third day in a row in the Gaza Strip, Sunday, with locals in Jabalia forced to ferry citizens around the city by paddleboards.

The scenes, which are becoming an annual event in Gaza, have sparked anger among locals, many of whom accuse the municipality of negligence over infrastructure repairs. “Every year it gets like this,” said Jabalia resident Bassam al-Khatib: “They talk about work projects and renovations, but there’s never any result.”

However, Palestinian officials from the Gaza Water Utility said this week that Israel had been holding up vital replacement parts for the Strip’s water and sewage systems. Parts that once took less than a month to get in Gaza are now reportedly taking up to five months, meaning sewage water is now being released directly into the sea, water leakage from pipes has increased, and rainwater runoff is leading to an increased incidence of flooding.
